Gaming Laptops - Are They Really Suitable For Gaming?

http://3critical.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/ps3lappie.jpg

Despite the ever increasing demand and popularity of gaming laptops; there still remains one persistent issue that just won't go away. Are gaming laptops really suitable for video gaming in the first place?

Many die-hard gamers still mock the whole notion of video gaming on a laptop computer. The two simply are not compatible, they do not compute. They argue a laptop is simply too small and too compact to handle all that heat --- literally, figuratively and physically.

Achieving high performance usually means any computer, whether desktop or laptop, will give off a lot of heat. And cramming all those high-end components into such a small confined space only adds to this problem. Many gamers complain that gaming notebooks simply produce too much heat and there is the ever persistent problem of frying your rig. Given the fact that many gamers also have a long-term obsession to overclocking gives this concern even more weight.

If you monitor the different gaming forums, you will hear constant anecdotal stories of gaming laptops simply unable to handle all that heat. And then there is the issue of fan noise as your gaming rig tries to keep everything on the cool side. Many find gaming laptops just too noisy and would rather try their luck with a gaming PC instead.

Besides why waste all that money on a gaming notebook when you can get a much better gaming system at a far cheaper price by going with a desktop PC. This issue of price advantage is one of the most compelling arguments for NOT buying a gaming laptop.

However, there are also several more very legitimate arguments that those die-hard and battle-wary gamers also know and make. One has to do with the whole idea of upgrading since gaming laptops can't be upgraded as easily as a desktop PC. Actually, with most laptops you can upgrade the RAM with ease if you have the free slots available. You can also upgrade the Hard Drive but depending on your laptop model, other components such as Graphics Cards and processors may be hard (if not impossible or worthwhile) to upgrade in a laptop compared with upgrading a desktop PC.

On the other hand, with a desktop PC, there is amble room for upgrading which makes it a much more suitable candidate since gaming systems need to be constantly upgraded if you want the best gaming performance possible; which after all is the unwritten creed of most true gamers. They want the best and they want it now.

However, major laptop makers know a good thing (profit) when they see it and are jumping all over the gaming laptop market. We are constantly seeing more and more powerful gaming systems hitting the marketplace. Recently, we saw Dell muscling in on Alienware (which Dell owns) by launching the new all-powerful Alienware m17x through its marketing outlets as well as through Alienware.

It's powerful mobile gaming systems like M17x which will gradually defeat this argument that laptops are no good for gaming. The M17x offers extreme high performance with an Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad overclockable processor and Dual 1 gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M graphics card (SLI Enabled 1,024MB) and with up to 8GB shared dual DDR3 at 1,333MHz. Impressive specs which would make many a desktop PC blush with envy.

Then again, there is the whole issue of style over performance. Many gamers just want and desire all that flash and cool style of high-end gaming laptops. They just might be the coolest looking devices on the planet. Plus, they are easier to lug around than a desktop PC, no matter which way you swing it.

Gaming laptops, despite the obvious objections from die-hard gamers with upgrading, overheating, fan noise and those hefty price tags, are probably here to stay and will gradually eat into the gaming desktop market. Whether they can also fully capture the hearts of true gamers is an entirely different question, one that won't be answered any time soon.

Tips to Keep Your Laptop Cool in the Summer

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2009/06/laptop-cleaning.jpg

As a result of Notebook computer's limited internal space, it's cooling system is very different from desktop computers. The quality of cooling is crucial to the stability of it, and since summer is here, this problem can not be ignored. CPU, graphic cards, hard drives, memory, and screen are the heart producing parts in the computers. CPU is the biggest source of heat, which had a direct impact on the temperature of computer. My friends used to joke that she can use her computer's CPU to fry eggs.

So, there are some good tips for keeping your laptop cool.

1. Keep the environment as cool as possible. Using a Notebook computer in the hot summer, you'd better use your air-conditioning. If there is no air-conditioning, at least use fans. Otherwise, even if the computer withstand, I am afraid you will not.

2. Put something under the computer to allow airflow between the laptop and the desk. It may sound like a small trick, but a very important one. You can put part of a book under it, or you can buy the computer cooling pads which works extremely well considering how cheap they are.

3. When using the in the bed or sofa, try not to block the air outlet of the Notebook computer. There are so many cases that the computer died simply because there is no way to get the hot air out. In summer time, you don't want to live in a house with all windows closed, neither does your computer.

Summer is always challenging for all the electronics. Use your common sense, and your computer will be as cool as you.

Finding Value in Replacement Laptop Batteries

http://www.digitals4shop.com/images/Laptop-Batteries/IBM/12J2464__K.JPG

One of the great advantages of using a laptop computer is its ability to operate it in a portable manner. This is achieved by the use of a battery as its power source. However, most users take the battery for granted and are unaware that it will eventually fail.

Most laptops today are powered by Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. These are a great alternative to the older technologies since they have a much higher power to weight ratio, are not prone to the memory effect phenomenon and are inherently more environmentally friendly. However, much like the older battery chemistries, they do have a limited lifetime. Although the older chemistries rates of failure were proportional to the number of charging cycles, the capacity of today's Lithium-ion batteries diminish with age.

When you find that your laptop computer does not hold its charge as long as it used to, or when your system's power management utility software indicates that its charge level is decreasing, you will need to find a replacement laptop battery to maintain your computer's operating time. Finding the correct battery is generally a matter of searching for a battery that will fit your computer's make and model number. In addition, the specifications for the battery are usually found imprinted on the charger. With this information in hand, there are several sources from which you can purchase a new battery. These generally include the computer manufacturer, specialized electronic and computer retailers and a number of Internet sources. You will also find that, in addition to the OEM battery, there may also be a number of generic equivalents available.

Buying a replacement laptop battery directly from the manufacturer is the easiest choice, but you will be paying a premium price for this convenience. Secondary sources of OEM batteries will generally charge you as much as the computer manufacturer and in some cases you may even pay more. This is true of both brick and mortar stores and online sites that sell computer batteries. But if you are a value shopper, you will soon realize that generic batteries will offer you the same level of performance at a substantial cost savings. Additionally, you may be able to increase your laptop's operating time by upgrading your battery and choosing one with a higher milliamp rating in the generic equivalent. These higher capacity generic batteries typically cost much less than the OEM's standard capacity battery.

Generic laptop batteries are produced at the same manufacturing plants that originally produced the laptop battery for the computer manufacturer; batteries are simply an out-sourced item for the computer maker. But these batteries may also be made at facilities whose standards are not as high as the primary plant's and the only way to ensure that you have purchased a quality battery is to check the reputation of the supplier or the seller, make sure that they provide a liberal warrantee and test the battery by charging it in your computer soon after it is received.

What Do We Know About Ring Back Tones?

http://www.mobivaz.com/images/vrbt.jpg

How do you show your own personal funky style to your callers? With a ring back tone of course. Ring back tones are all the rage now; in this tech-driven my music is better than yours, world we live in. Kids, parents, and especially teens are all riding the ring back wave. It's fun, it's entertaining and it's simple.

Your callers or group of callers will hear your chosen song when they call instead of the "vanilla ring" as it is now referred to as. Not that there is anything wrong with Vanilla, but nowadays plain just doesn't cut it like it use to. The drive to be different is too strong. I mean, come on "All the cool kids are doing it" seems to be the phrase that will make anyone run out and buy anything, including ring backs.
Now I am not judging by no means.

I myself am a ring back user and proud of it. While my cellular provider offers free monthly ring backs of the most requested download for that month, I enjoying downloading new ones and moving around old ones. My friends never know what to expect and my family all have their own special song I picked out for them that has some sentimental meaning. I personally think it's great to hear what other people like. How else would have certain artist made it big or certain songs become a platinum seller? Word of mouth is a great way to support your favorite band/artist, so what better way than letting your friends actually hear for themselves the new jam by the new artist you think is "fly".

Ring back tones are an expression of who you are and advertisement for your artist. Two great qualities in one download, for little cost. Get your ring back tones today and start sharing your music.

Requiring a Greater Laptop Computer?

http://www.computersavenue.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/flybook-vm-advanced-laptop-6.jpg

Notebooks are some of the most convenient machines available. Laptops have all the features of a home computer with the feature of portability. Laptops can be brought anyplace at all times, making labor and leisure to a whole other point. Many individuals have difficulty selecting which laptop to buy. Whether it be a concern of affordability or engineering, there are good qualities and bad qualities to every single laptop, making it worrisome to get the best computer.

The introductory step is to uncover a laptop store or site that has good prices but is still trustworthy. A lot of individuals get caught up in uncovering the least expensive notebook on the market but forget to see the quality. Receiving an affordable notebook is great, sure, but it is all a waste if the laptop breaks down in a few weeks. Laptop Shoppers is amidst those trustworthy web pages with mid-range prices and best grade brands released.

Soon after uncovering a site to purchase a laptop from, the purchaser needs to consider what he or she is going to use the laptop for. A laptop needed to start an internet store will need more unique parts than one needed for a high school student. The more the laptop has to remember, the more storage it will require. If the laptop has to deal with multiple projects at once, it probably needs to have a quick processor. A purchaser just needs to apply some common knowledge to limit a shopper's search for a laptop.

The cost of the notebook is also a concern. Acer and Dell both produce solid notebooks for inexpensive prices. They do not have all the fancy parts of some of the more expensive brands, but they with out a doubt offer good computers for the cost. Higher end manufactures like Toshiba and Apple make more developed computers, but they also charge more for their products. All the notebooks are fine; it is just a matter of how much a person can spend.

Laptop Bags - Which One is Perfect For a Girl?

http://www.nofullstop.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/willow-laptop-bags.jpg

Most people think that men use laptops more as compared to the women, but they are wrong. As the ratio of laptops is increasing, the ratio of laptop bags and cases is also increasing. Most people did not know that there are bags which are designed for women especially. Designers are designing very good quality women bags which are durable and stylish as well.

Here are some points that a girl should consider while buying a bag for her:

The first thing that a girl should consider is the color of the bag. The favorite colors of most girls are pink and purple. If you find a bag in these colors then these bags are specially designed for girls. Women bags are available in other colors also. There are no restrictions for girls to choose other colors.

The second very important thing that a girl should consider is the size of the bag. Your bag should have enough space to carry your computer and other necessary items such as purse and wallet. Make sure that you bag should have pockets and compartments in it.

Consider the weight of the bag. No doubt females are strong but no girl likes to carry a 40 pound bag on her shoulders. A girl should always select a bag which is lighter in weight. Another essential tip is that you should select a bag with wheels, handles and wide straps.

In the end, there are hundreds of women laptop bags available in the markets and on websites. The very easy way of purchasing a bag is online shopping. Always choose a bag according to your requirements.

Laptop Memory Upgrades

http://www.aussiepcfix.com/images/laptop-ram-memory-upgrade1.jpg

If you'd like to speed up your laptop than installing laptop memory might be the quickest and easiest way to do it. Most laptops have memory that just snaps in place, most people can do it themselves without paying anybody to do it. Installing memory means your computer can load more data from the hard drive into it's memory. The more it can load the less it has to keep going back to the hard drive, the less it has to load from the hard drive the quicker it is. First you need to make sure your new memory is going to fit before you install it. Let's take a look at the three most important things you need to match when replacing your laptop memory.

Type of Laptop Memory.

Your laptop RAM memory is probably one of three types unless you have an ancient computer. DDR type memory is what most laptops have today. DDR stands for Double Data Rate, and comes in three types DDR, DDR2 and DDR3. DDR2 laptop memory is twice as fast as DDR laptop memory, and DDR3 is twice as fast as DDR2. So before you replace your memory you need to find whether you have DDR, or DDR2 or 3. Replacing 2 with 3 won't make your computer faster, many times it won't even work.

Memory Speed

Each type of memory will have different speeds. You need to find a speed that matches or exceeds your computer. You won't really see a performance gain by going with faster memory, but it will work. The reason faster memory won't help is because your computer can only move so much information into and out of the computer. Think of the memory as being a toll booth, not matter how fast the speed limit is on either side of the toll booth, you still have to wait in line. Your memory speed limit may be higher but the data still has to wait in line. You can sometimes open up your laptop and see the specs on the memory it has or you can go to the manufacturers website and it should have a memory finder.

Pin Type

Each "stick" of memory has pins on it that fit into a slot on the computer. The number of pins should match exactly. If not they won't fit. Their are notches cut into the memory that line up with the slots on the computer so you couldn't install the wrong memory even if you wanted to. You won't be able put it in wrong either, which is good.

So the three most important things to look for are:

  1. Memory Type
  2. Memory Speed
  3. Pin Type

Learning and Training Using IT Technology

http://www.wmin.ac.uk/images/it%20learning%20cropped.jpg

Education has been in existence for a long time. And the subjects we teach and methods we use change over time. But as time goes by, everything changes along the way, especially on education. Nowadays, education's new face is e-learning, or electronic learning. Elearning is defined as the delivery of learning content via electronic media such as the Internet, audio and video equipment, web-based, CD-ROM, and Web 2.0 media. To put it simply, e-learning is another form of technology-assisted teaching and learning.

The software platform that automates the process of teaching and learning is known as Learning Management Systems (LMS). For the ability to facilitate the development and distribution of courses materials over the Internet, more and more educational institutes and businesses organizations have embraced it both open source software and proprietary LMS.

E-learning is not necessarily distance learning. Students and instructors engaged in e-learning may not be geographically distanced from each other. As an example, students on campus living on campus or nearby may take course partially or fully online. Also a student can even do self-study online training without any need of teachers at all. E-learning can add an extra layer of flexibility to both students and instructors in terms where and when they want to learn and give lessons. E-learning and distance learning is not synonymous. Distance learning refers to the learning process that uses the Internet as a form of a vehicle for delivery of instructional content, while e-learning covers a much wide range of media for learning content delivery.

The rapid growth of E-learning in recent years is often associated with the growth of the Internet. For there are other types of learning that are growing at a considerable rate too. For instance, mobile learning or rather m-learning, is a rapidly growing innovation with advantage of allowing learners to be on the move while learning. M-learning is an extension of e-learning, which uses mobile phones and Personal digital assistants (PDA) that can play online computer training videos. However, the growth of m-learning is limited by the bandwidth available to deliver sophisticated learning content.

With no doubt, new technology will open the new options for new way of authoring and delivering learning content. Organizations and institutions will be equipped with new tools to train employees without loss of productivity and high cost of hiring a consultant. This is education at its best ever.

Computer Freezing - You Can Fix it and Prevent It

http://static.squidoo.com/resize/squidoo_images/-1/lens4718682_1243420260power_button.jpg

Windows PC users often experience freezing problems and must know how to handle this. Freezing may even happen when you are not working on your computer. It can take place during an antivirus scan, while watching videos, listening to audio material or working with the word processor.

Usually, to recover from system freezing you can press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination. With Windows 95, 98, and ME, this will give you the option of rebooting your computer. With Windows NT, 2000, and XP when you press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination this will open the Task Manager window. You may then browse through the running programs listed in Task Manager, pick the program that is not responding, then click the End Task button to close the program. When the program is closed, your system should be running normally.

You can experience system freezing if you run an application which is not compatible with your system. Quite obviously you need to remove the application to correct this problem. If there is a compatible version of the application you should obtain this and install it instead.

If you install a Windows operating system that requires more resources than your PC has, this will result in freezing. The minimum system requirements for Windows XP is a 300 MHz processor, 1.5 GB disk space, SVGA (800x600) resolution monitor, and CD-ROM or DVD Drive for installation. If the processor, disk space, and memory does not meet these requirements, you may experience frequent system freezing.

Freezing may result if any hardware such as the keyboard or mouse are not compatible with the operating system on your PC. Any program which needs a lot of memory can cause freezing due to possible memory conflicts with other programs and even with the operating system. This type of conflict will markedly slow down your computer and can be the cause of frequent freezing. To eliminate these problems, you should only install hardware and programs which are compatible with your computer.

Some applications like Internet Explorer and some third-party software, will store information in the Temp folder of your system. If your hard disk capacity is small you may not have the space to store these temporary files, and you will as a result experience freezing. To avoid this you can use utilities, for example Disk Cleanup, to remove unnecessary files and data from your hard drive and thus to free up considerable disk space. By using Disk cleanup you may remove temporary internet files, unwanted files, program files, web pages and various other data. Disk Cleanup will empty your Recycle Bin and compress files. With Windows XP, You can find Disk Cleanup by clicking on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tool -> Disk Cleanup.

Errors and bad sectors will develop on your hard drive over a period of use. Your computer will freeze when you attempt to access information stored in the bad sectors. The hard disk must be kept in good condition by regularly using Windows XP maintenance applications such as Chkdsk and Disk Defragmenter.

To open Disk Defragmenter go to the System Tools menu. You can then defragment drives which are identified by the letters C:, D:, etc. You can run ChkDsk from Start -> Run or from the command prompt. Chkdsk volume:/f will repair disk errors without scanning for bad sectors, and chkdsk volume:/r commands will repair errors and will identify bad sectors on the hard drive and mark them.

Windows registry may also cause system errors and freezing if it is corrupted or damaged. Correction of this problem is obtained by scanning the registry for errors and removing all unwanted and outdated material. The best way to handle this is by downloading a quality registry cleaner tool from the internet. Registry cleaner applications are designed to be easy to use and will correct registry problems safely and quickly. We tested several of the most popular registry cleaners and found that there is considerable difference in performance, ease of use and features available. We found that one registry cleaner was able to find as much as 50% more errors than some others and was a superior application.

Increasing demands at work place require the workforce to be technically skilled and trained in essential skills. People can gain skills in any area, be it finance, human resource, health care, management, personal development, marketing, or technical or IT training, through computer based training. Self study computer training is gaining popularity as people find 'any time, anywhere' study option very flexible and convenient. It comes in the form of CDs which learners can insert in their computers or laptops anytime study while they are at home or in office.

Software training CD or courseware helps new job seekers a lot of confidence before entering the job market. The employers are looking out for additional skills and it would add value to your resume to have a software skill listed there. Even for employees a software training CD can improve their productivity at workplace. After the completion of training, the user understands the application much better and can thus handle and perform tasks more efficiently. Say for example, an employee is not comfortable with Excel but after completing a basic course, he would be able to present his data much better and in a more professional way. For companies who want to move ahead with times, it is vital to have your employees trained in essential skills to compete in the competitive market. Computer based training is a very inexpensive and effective way to impart knowledge to all the employees.

Employees or learners which use self paced computer training CD can pause, forward and rewind the material and can re- read or skip the instruction material as per their choice. They have highly interactive content and hands on activities which make the learning more effective and help the learners to retain information better. It also does not allow the learner to get bored with the curriculum.

Computer training on DVDs has more content than CDs. The instructor led lectures are video taped and then presented in full motion, video and audio graphics. If you want to install the content of these training DVDs on the hard disk then one must remember that they require a large disk storage space; with DVDs requiring even more space than CDs. Computer training on DVDs allows to go through the content faster. The training DVDs have lectures, demos, discussions, presentations, and assessments; all of which aid in effective learning. Certified instructors teach the course and create a curriculum which gives the good quality information.

Wireless CCTV and Why People Use It

http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00VvWQsOGMZfzFM/2-4GHz-Wireless-CCTV-Camera-WM-115-WC-087-.jpg

Wireless CCTV cameras are fast replacing traditional CCTV cameras mainly because of their ability to let you see your home or business across the internet, as opposed to on a monitor in the same building as the cameras which is what traditional CCTV was all about. Following the widespread adoption of wireless CCTV in recent years, I wanted to discover a few of the weird and wonderful ways in which people are using the technology.

To achieve this, my UK-based company recently conducted a fascinating little survey to see what it is about wireless CCTV that really makes a difference to people's lives. I'm going to share some of the results with you in this article. They contained more than a few surprises I can tell you. We asked people to finish a simple sentence and what follows are some of the interesting ways in which people answered:

I will never be without my wireless internet CCTV because...

  • "When my son gets home from school, the Internet CCTV system sends me a text message and I can log in to see what he's up to!"
  • "We were going to get a burglar alarm for the house, but spent the money on this camera system instead. If I am away on business and my burglar alarm is ringing on the wall, I'm hardly going to hear it am I? With this system I get a text message when something happens."
  • "I paid a lot of hard-earned cash for my place in the sun and I want peace of mind that it's OK even when I am thousands of miles away. With this system I can see it any time I want, anywhere I happen to be, and if the worst happens and my house gets broken into, at least I will know about it straight away and I can get someone round there."
  • "It's like having someone looking after our property 24 hours a day."
  • "I sometimes take a look at my pubs at night, after closing, from wherever I happen to be. I can make sure the staff are locking up - and not drinking after hours with their mates!"
  • "Back in the UK, we could show our friends and neighbours our Spanish villa - and how sunny it is right at that moment."
  • "I just love new gadgets to be honest, and this is revolutionary! I can even see the house on my mobile phone, and switch the cameras on and off by sending a text message."
  • "We build houses and we have a wireless camera in the show home on the development, so prospective buyers can take a look before deciding to visit."
  • "When I am at work, I log in to check on the dogs."
  • "We run an on-line shopping company. Our UK customers can see us at work, which gives them confidence in us and shows that there are real people behind the website."
  • "It helps my property management company to attract business, because when our customers have this internet CCTV, we can get a copy of any alerts from the cameras and we're on the spot to take immediate action."

It's great to hear that people are using wireless internet CCTV in so many different ways. It definitely seems to be one of those things that once experienced, is never given up.

Office Technology - Computer Accessories

http://ramdevstationers.com/images/desktop_office.jpg

New age office technology features computer accessories which have revolutionized the way we work with computers. Businessmen and corporate enterprises have found that owning a laptop or a desktop computer alone wouldn't suffice. There are a lot of complementary components that need to go along with them to establish a full-fledged working environment.

Computer accessories aid in getting better results. They have specific purposes and benefits. Take for instance a situation where you find it difficult to view your laptop screen; you can always opt for a laptop raiser to adjust its height to your specific needs. This eliminates the constant need for bending and helps you maintain a proper posture, thereby avoiding back related ailments. Similarly, a notebook arm lets you adjust the positioning of the laptop for easy handling. This is best suited for labs and offices where there is space constraint and people are constantly on the move.

Advanced office technology solutions include the latest computer accessories, which have made the experience of working more pleasurable. Unlike earlier, when stress was a major factor affecting efficiency, today we have comfortable, anti-stress components that ease computer usage. These include gel based wrist-rest (keyboard) and mouse pads which help reduce pressure from long duration typing and handling of the mouse.

Computer monitor accessories are among the most sought after office technology solutions. Monitors emit harmful radiation and the constant glare affects our eyes. The use of anti-glare radiation filters on the monitor helps computer workaholics attain relief from headaches and watery eyes.

The Flawed Logic of Competent AI Assistance Considered

http://www.fineupgrades.com/files/dealer_maps/AI%20logic%20site%20map.jpg

Many are looking forward to a time in the near future when we will have artificial intelligent assistants that can work along humans, side-by-side and help them stay efficient. This will surely happen and computer scientists are busy working on this right now. Of course, there is only one logical conclusion to this technology, once those AI robots watch and observe, and learn from experience on the job?

You see, all their knowledge will eventually download to all the other robots of their kind, thus exponential learning, indeed, there will be no learning curve like a human apprentice. And as a reality check on this entire issue consider this;

By the time Artificial Intelligent assistants are completely competent, will be about the same time they will be replacing humans anyway. When they can design an AI Computer or assistant android that is really useful to work alongside humans and learn to serve them better, is the time that humans will no longer be needed.

For those who believe that an artificially intelligent robot will not take their job, well, they are just denying the facts really, it's only a matter of time and that clock is already clicking by. Humans are not going to be needed for production and supply much longer, so we need to figure out what to do with them all.

What is SCADA?

http://www.windowsfordevices.com/files/misc/citect_scada.jpg

SCADA stands for the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. This system basically collects the information from the various sensors installed at the factory or the remote locations. Then the whole of the collected data is sent to the common or central computer for the further processing and storage. This term is used to symbolize the control and management solutions in various small and large-scale industries such as Water management, Power sector, environment control and production units.

SCADA includes networks, controllers, softwares and the hardware, such as sensors, which will transmit and receive the signals. These sensors will collect the data from the site and send to the central system. The central system has the Remote Terminal Units (also called RTU's) working as its brain. RTU's are programmed to a particular set of logics and then they process the data according to that.

Human interference is allowed in the RTU's for changing the parameters or reprogramming. It is a real time system and will maintain the log of meter readings as well as the various changes in the status of the sensors. For the human interference SCADA has the Human Machine Interface (HMI). This is where the whole data that has been processed can be viewed by the human. If one is to make any changes then those changes are also made at this end through the use of programmable logic controllers. These HMI's are linked to the databases from where HMI's will collect data and then present to the human controllers in the form of graphs or tables.

These systems are extremely useful on small scale such as weather management as well as for the large-scale industries such as nuclear plants. These systems are easily available in the market and can be customized according to the requirements at a very affordable cost.

The way people connect to the Internet has changed dramatically over the last few years. From dial-up connection to broadband Internet, the technology used to receive and transmit data from other computers has significantly improved. Nowadays, one of the best and fastest ways to upload and download data to and from the Internet is by using a cable modem.

As the name implies, such a hardware device is a type of modem that make use of radio frequency channels on a cable television to send and receive data. Using a cable modem is much better than a dial-up connection, which uses telephone lines, because you can download large files from the web in a short time. And like any other modem and computer hardware devices, this needs a program, called driver, to interact with the PC's operating system.

If you are one of those people who cannot survive a day without checking your e-mail or visiting your favorite web site, then you have to take good care of your cable modem. Aside from ensuring that your hardware device is free from physical damage, you have to make sure that your cable modem driver is always up to date to avoid Internet connection problems. It would be best take precautionary measures because it would be difficult for you to get an updated driver from the Internet if you are having problems with your modem.

Updating these device drivers can also speed up your connection, as well as help ensure that your hardware device would continue to function once you change or upgrade your computer's operating system. To get an updated driver for your cable modem, you can go directly to its manufacturer's web site and download the latest software in its technical support page. What Makes the HTML Code Essential

http://www.racineweb.com/images/code_snip.gif

I recall my mum telling me the subjects she used to study when she was in school. Some of them were similar to the ones I studied in school except for one class. They were taught how to use a typewriter. At the time it was the next best thing.

These days kids are instructed how to use their computers. In fact some can take computer classes so they know how to utilize the basic programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. Which leaves us to question whether they should also study the HTML code.

For anybody who is not computer literate this is a perplexing code that computers utilize to send and create information and layouts. Every web site that you look at when you go on the Internet utilizes the HTML code. You cannot view it unless you can enter into the mysterious back door of the site. Then you might be assaulted by the code and what it really stands for.

I, myself pride on being able to operate a computer better then most individuals and having been utilizing one since I was four years old. Yet, I have never been able to know the HTML code. It is as difficult as attempting to learn Spanish or French. It takes time and somebody who knows what they are talking about.

But learning the HTML code used to make them may just be necessary. Thousands of companies are placing their info on their own individual web sites and they need one or more individuals to know how to create it and set it up. If this is something you would enjoy to do then perhaps it is time you took classes at your school and learned the HTML language.

Avionics Technology

http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/1/6/3/1213361.jpgIf you have had the opportunity to see a plane's cockpit while in flight or have see a missile launched from a fighter jet, you have seen avionics in action. Avionics consist of the electronic systems that are used on aircraft and spacecraft as well as artificial satellites. This includes systems for communications, navigation, monitoring, and weather. The word "avionics" also refers to the science and the development of technology as it applies to aeronautics and astronautics. Avionics fall into two main categories: aircraft avionics and mission/tactical avionics.

Aircraft Avionics

Many of the avionics systems on an aircraft can be found and controlled in the cockpit. You'll find systems for controlling the aircraft, monitoring, communication, navigation, anti-collision and weather sensing. The capacity of the aircraft's electrical system depends on its size - airliners, military combat aircraft and spacecraft will usually run larger systems to drive their avionics. Several major vendors manufacture flight avionics systems, one of the largest being Honeywell.

Mission/Tactical Avionics

Military aircraft are fit with systems that are either designed to sense and respond to a threat or to deliver an offensive attack. Communication systems are able to withstand combat conditions while sophisticated radar systems are made to help pilots fly jets safely at low altitudes. Sonar is used to aid military aircraft in marine environments by tracking submarines and surface threats. Electronic support measures and defensive aids (ESM/DAS) are used to obtain information about possible threats. These systems can also be used to launch devices to counter attacks against the aircraft.

Avionics systems can also be found on police and EMS aircraft. Police helicopters track suspects and EMS aircraft locate rescue victims from the air using video or Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR).

Creating C# Classes - KISS Methodology

http://blogs.tedneward.com/content/binary/WindowsLiveWriter/MSDNFPrimerArticleFeedback_39B/fsharp-ildasm_thumb.jpg

Classes offer a way to encapsulate related functions in such a manner as to have them available at their least common functionality locally as well as remotely.

As an example we will examine object linking and embedding database (OleDB) management and utilization.

The namespace is a unique mechanism to house and organize methods and other components of a particular class. The namespace should have structure of cid_fmaid.appname. The cid is the company id. The underscore character is unchanged the famid is the family id of the application.

The appname is the application name the namespace is applicable to. When we expand the acronym to its fullest usability we yield BCS_Access.bex. The bex in this example refers to the Book Exchange application. By using this naming convention the technician is informed about the overall function of the aforementioned class. Properties are intentionally omitted from this exercise. Properties are only used when the provided mechanisms (passed parameters and returned types) cease to satisfy the functional requirements.

The first consideration is to establish a connection with the data base management system (DBMS).

OpenDB establishes the connection string and instantiates in instance of OleDB for subsequent processing.

CreateCmd creates a handle for parsing SQL commands.

SetSql attaches text commands for the command processor to handle.

ClearParams resets the parameters collection used by the command.

CreateParm instructs the command processor to instantiates a new parameter in the parameters collection used by the command.

ExecSql tells the command processor to execute the command with parameters that have been presented. This level of command does not return result sets. Instead it performs create, read, update and delete functions which may affect one or many records in the associated table.

LoadReader provides all necessary communications to handle result set yielded from the associated query. This result or record set is processed on a by record basis. Our class provides the user with a handle containing all the records in the result set.

CloseReader terminates reader processing and closes the result set reader.

CloseDB terminates the instantiated instance of OleDB.

These are the core methods use for handling idiosyncrasies of OleDB utilization for our designed C # class. Other methods are employed which bundle the core methods in sequence to achieve an overall desired effect.

Computer Programing

http://degreedirectory.org/cimages/multimages/2/computer_programming.jpg

Basic Computer Programing

In this article, we are going to present computer programing and discover how it may be applied to command the way your computer operates. Generally, computer beginners aren't concerned in controlling the computer, new computer users are commonly concerned in learning more about how it all works. Nevertheless they may be surprised to learn that computer programing increases computer knowledge as a whole and it can assist to decrease the fearfulness and intimidation associated with using a new computer.

Computer programing is creating a succession of commands that enable the computer to do some actions. The people who program computers (called Computer Programers) use a programing language to communicate with a computer. You might have heard of some of these languages in the past such as Visual Basic, C++, or Fortran. There are hundreds of other programing language and neither one is best than the other. Just about all of them are capable of executing the same tasks and accomplishing the same goals. A programer chooses one language by a simple preference.

Each of these languages differ by the way they communicate with a computer, the commands that they abide by are very specific. Not a single command of one language can be exchanged with the commands or language of another. But all of them can be used to control a computer.

At present it would be impossible to teach you how to program any language in a single article or lesson. But we can still introduce you to some of programing's most basic concepts - starting with the commands. Commands are the instructions that a computer conforms to perform an action. To make them work inside of a program, programers assign commands to objects like buttons for example.

The commands in a program are pretty worthless unless they have some data to pursue so programers either give the programs some information to work with (list of names or numbers for example) or they make the program generate it's own data. Occasionally, the data comes from an outside source like the Internet or the computer that the program resides. The data that a program receives is called input and data that the program generates is called output.

Other times, the data is unknown. If the program were working with a simple algebra equation like, "x + 5 = y," the variables "x" and "y" would be unidentified pieces of data. Or if a program were to calculate a date "x" days from now, the variable "x" would be an unidentified piece of data until we tell the program what "x" is. In programming, it's sometimes required to work with unidentified pieces of data.

That's when conditions are convenient, conditions allow a program to execute an action based on the event of a previous command. Using this type of command, we could instruct a program to do one thing if the "x" variable in our latter example turned out to be 9 days, and then do different thing if the variable turned out to be 31 days.

Commands, data, variables, and conditions help build the most simple programs and there are certainly more components of any programming language. But when they're typed into a programing language and compiled to create an executable file (a file ending with the .exe extension), they turn into a software application.

As we mentioned earlier, you can use a programing language to control your computer. By using simple commands, you can program your computer to perform mathematical tasks, fill out web forms, compose an email message and send it off, or any number of other things. If you're interested, you may find Visual Basic one of the most easiest computer programing languages to learn. Visual Basic is an object-oriented programing language and it automatically codes much of a program the minute a programmer drags a button onto a screen.

IPTV - 10 Important Facts

http://www.masternewmedia.org/images/iptv-diagram_stb_500.jpg

Is IPTV technology everything it's supposed to be, or is it just another example of technological hype? Here are 10 all-important facts and advantages relating to IPTV. Maybe this information can assist your decision as to whether you are ready for the IPTV revolution.

1. Internet protocol television or IPTV, is a progressively popular technology for the transportation of data information and Audio and Video (AV), across an IP based digital network. This might include Ethernet, WAN, LAN or the internet. Add to the equation a set top box (STB) and AV information can be streamed over existing networks to PCs or televisions. It's also possible for IPTV to be one to one (Unicast) or one to many (Multicast).

2. According to new research findings, currently 15.5 million people subscribe to IPTV services, 8.4 million of these subscribers are from Europe.

3. Because of the high bandwidth demands of digital video, IPTV requires broadband Internet connectivity. Theoretically, plugging in to this high speed internet would allow IPTV users additional control over their television programming and the ability to tailor-make it to their personal preferences.

4. Crucially IPTV systems avoid interruption of critical networks by employing a separate video LAN (local area network).

5. All free-view channels are delivered without SAT or Terrestrial receivers.

6. It has been predicted that compared to the current 3.3 million subscribers in the USA, there will be approximately 12.7 million IPTV users by 2012.

7. Local content, movies and sport may be added for supplementary income in hotels, or provided without charge to a student campus.

8. AV sources can be streamed over present networks to PCs or televisions with the addition of set top boxes (STB).

9. All TV programmes can later be retrieved from the IPTV network due to its storage facility.

10. IPTV based networks are practically immune to interference, ghosting, harmonics, reflections, cross modulation and so forth - problems that are all frequent in analogue systems. Digital transmission over the coaxial networks signify that some of these issues have been resolved, nevertheless, these still suffer from some of the above.

An Interesting Use of IPTV Technology

A classic illustration of how IPTV technology is being employed in an increasingly inventive number of products, is with a luxurious, IP enabled bathroom television. These TVs are the ultimate in bathroom opulence, permitting the viewer safely to view television whilst soaking in a bathtub full of bubbles, or even taking a shower.

These products provide a convenient and simple solution to hotels worldwide who are adopting the installation of digital IPTV networks across their properties. No more will they have to conceal an STB in the void behind the bathroom or shower wall and install a separate IR receiver, but instead just feed an ethernet cable into the back of the screen to deliver television, radio, VOD and any additional services which the hotel chooses to provide.

X Wireless CCTV - Lighting For Indoor Cameras

http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/Full/n32cx.jpgWireless internet CCTV cameras, also known as wireless IP cameras, are the digital replacement for traditional analogue CCTV. Unlike their obsolete analogue cousins, most modern wireless internet CCTV cameras have a reasonable capability to produce images at relatively low light levels, but adding some illumination will make the image from indoor cameras crisper and clearer. This article will show you some of the options.

If you have installed an indoor wireless internet CCTV camera or IP camera in your home or office for the first time, you may notice that at night the image becomes dark, fuzzy and blurred. The camera will try its best in these circumstances to compensate for the low light levels, but there will be a limit to what it can do. Assuming the camera does not have infra-red lighting built in, it will simply not be able to produce images at all in a totally dark room. Let's look at some of the possible solutions to this problem:

The first option is to choose a camera with built-in infra-red or IR lamps. Such cameras often have the ability to switch automatically between normal and infra-red viewing as the ambient light deteriorates when it gets dark. This enables the camera to send good quality images at very low light levels, although they will be in black and white when the infra-red lighting is being used, which is a side-effect of this type of light. Unfortunately, built-in infra-red lighting can add quite significantly to the cost of the camera so we're going to have a look at the other options in the next sections.

As already mentioned, infra-red lighting produces black and white images, so if you want crisp, full colour images after dark the best way to achieve this is to add some conventional lighting to the scene. A cheap and effective solution is to have a table lamp or two dotted around the room. These can be fitted with timers so that they come on only during the night, and using low-energy bulbs makes them very inexpensive to leave on. You will have full colour images all night and even if you need to buy several lights it will likely be far less expensive than a camera with infra-red capability. The only thing to watch out for is where to place the lights. They should enhance the scene without dazzling the camera, so if at all possible the lights should be out of shot. If this is not possible, lampshades will help to diffuse the light. A certain amount of experimentation may be required to get the best results.

One of the real benefits of wireless internet CCTV cameras is their capability to communicate intelligently across the internet. This capability can be put to good use when it comes to lighting. You can obtain a very inexpensive kit from a specialist supplier that will enable the camera, unbelievably, to switch the lights on and off, which avoids them being on all night. You can get this set up so that motion detection can cause the camera to switch the lights on and it will then get a better look at any intruders! Of course, a major drawback of this approach is that the camera may not detect movement in the first place if the scene is too dark. Instead of controlling the light switching by motion detection, you can choose to switch the lights on and off manually. You can simply click a button on your camera's web page or, amazingly, even send an SMS text message from your mobile phone to switch the lights on and off in your home, even from the other side of the world! These possibilities have only become a reality thanks to the communication skills of internet CCTV cameras, a far cry from the old analogue CCTV systems.

Whichever option you choose, making sure that there is adequate lighting need not be expensive. I recommend it as a wise investment if you are going to get the best quality images from your wireless internet CCTV cameras.

Wireless CCTV - Dynamic DNS For Beginners

http://www.sovereigncctv.co.uk/media/images/product_detail/SNP3300.gif

Wireless internet CCTV, also known as IP CCTV, communicates through your broadband line and onwards to the internet. This can cause problems if your home broadband has a dynamic IP address, because when you want to connect to your cameras from outside, you won't know what that address is. This article shows you how to overcome the problem by using Dynamic DNS.

Most home ADSL packages still give you a dynamic or changing IP address, which is simply the address of your home's network on the internet. These addresses are allocated from a pool of available addresses and allow the internet provider to have fewer addresses than customers, saving money. This used to work well because early broadband modems "dialled" a connection when the attached computer requested it, rather like the old dial-up modems. Nowadays, though, modern wireless modem/routers tend to remain connected permanently, so we are reaching the point where the internet provider is having to allow one IP address per customer, and may as well allocate a static or unchanging one. However, as of today most people have dynamic addresses and this is an obstacle to contacting your wireless internet camera from the outside world, as I will explain in the next section.

Just as your broadband line has an IP address, so your camera has its own address or port. For example, if your home IP address is 91.103.218.59 and the camera's port is 8765, assuming your router is set up with port forwarding (outside the scope of this article) you can contact your camera by typing "http:// 91.103.218.59:8765" into a browser window. This may work today, but by tomorrow that 91.103.218.59 IP address could have been allocated to someone else, and you will not find your camera on the end of it any more. This is where Dynamic DNS or just "DDNS" comes in.

DDNS allows you to contact your wireless internet CCTV camera using an address that never changes, even when your broadband's IP address changes. It requires two things in order to work: a DDNS service provider and a router or camera that offers DDNS support. Most modern wireless routers offer DDNS support, but few internet CCTV cameras do. As long as either the camera or the router offers this feature, all is well. First, you visit the website of the DDNS service provider and sign up for an account. The most popular provider is dyndns.com and it's free. You choose your own unique internet address such as "mywirelesscamera.dyndns.org" and you will also have a user name and password. (Incidentally, the purpose of this service is simply to make that link between your IP address, whatever it happens to be at the time, and a fixed address or domain name.) Having registered a DDNS account, next you log into your router's administration pages and find the DDNS section. Here you simply key in the DDNS provider name, your account details and the address that you chose. Now, whenever your broadband provider changes your home IP address, your router will tell dyndns.com, and this means you can always contact your camera from wherever you happen to be, by keying the same unchanging address into a browser window, in our example: "http://mywirelesscamera.dyndns.org:8765".

There are a lot of myths surrounding Dynamic DNS. I hope this article has exploded a few of them and given you enough information to keep your wireless internet cameras accessible from the internet.

Cloud Computing - What is That?

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/cloud-computing-1.gif

You may have heard a lot about Cloud Computing recently and maybe you are getting confused. You are in good company. I saw a video recently where dozens of experts were asked what it is. And there were dozens of different answers (including 'when I use my laptop on a plane'). You may even have seen Larry Ellison's rant on YouTube:

"The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women's fashion. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It's complete gibberish. It's insane. When is this idiocy going to stop"

Lets lay down some definitions to clarify this confusion. Cloud Computing generally means that instead of running your application on your computer, you run it on someone else's computer and access it via a web browser. The term comes from the ubiquitous use of a cloud to represent the Internet on PowerPoint presentations. Instead of buying your application from a software house, you run it from the Internet and pay for it when you need it. Last year this approach was called Software as a Service (SaaS). However that was very 2008; these days you refer to Cloud Computing.

Cloud computing 1970's style

Running an application remotely over a network is of itself not a very new concept. In 1980 I produced a company budget using a teletype machine connected via a dial-up line to an ADP computer somewhere in the cloud that was the ADP network. I paid by the hour and all the budget runs cost about $3,000 in total. The following year I found I could save a lot of money and get a quicker result by running a brand new spreadsheet program called Visicalc on a $2,000 Apple II computer. Thus began the decline of cloud computing; 1970's style.

Cloud computing 2000's style

Roll forward a couple of decades and networks have got a great deal faster and cheaper. The economics are different, and cloud computing is looking a good alternative to supporting individual PC applications or even your own mainframe.

Can you search on Google, find an application and be up and running with your new billing system the same day? Possibly not. These are the people you might come across.

Force.com

Salesforce.com provides the market-leading contact management service. This is now called either sales force automation (SFA) or customer relationship management (CRM) depending on whether you are dealing with prospective or existing customers. The Salesforce software is provided on their own mainframes and is accessed via a browser. They charge per month per user.

In some industries, such as financial technology, Salesforce.com is ubiquitous. In fact they have such a high market penetration that to grow further they have to diversify. Their chosen route is to create a website (force.com) where other people can offer their applications to run on their platform. They call it the AppExchange.

There are over 800 applications listed, the vast majority of which seem to be add-ons to the Salesforce.com system. This is however obviously a very interesting concept and other non-salesforce applications are being added.

Netsuite

Netsuite is a complete CRM, SFA, Accounting, ERP (enterprise resource planning) and ecommerce system provided as software as a service. They don't call their main application Cloud Computing, instead they have a 'Cloud' offering which consists of other peoples add-ons - a bit like the AppExchange concept.

Google

Google have a suite of office applications that run 'in the cloud'. These could be very useful if you have a special need to share the documents with others.

Amazon

Amazon has a Cloud offering which in its raw state is a virtual private server (VPS). This is a login to a Unix or Windows computer that looks and feels as if you have the computer all to yourself. Physically you are sharing the computer with many others but this is all hidden from you.

There are many VPS services on offer from many suppliers. However the Amazon offering has a big difference. When you create a server you can specify that it is to be preloaded with software from a library. This is what transforms it into 'Cloud Computing' rather than just any old VPS. Because the library of functions is pre-tested and pre-installed the startup time and cost should be much reduced.

Hosting providers

If Amazon can market a VPS offering as Cloud Computing, then the door is opened for many others to do the same - but without the preloaded software bit. You might see this as 'Cloud Hosting' instead. Thus the definition of the term is migrating as we watch it.

3 Common Excel Formulas

http://thecadgeek.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/windowslivewriterlinkingexcelandautocadwithdatalinks-bdfddatalink3.jpg

If you have worked for at least a few hours with Excel at work or at home, by now you are probably comfortable copy/pasting data, entering simple formulas, and making basic formatting changes like adding bold or italics to text.

The great thing about Excel - and this goes for almost any user at any level of expertise - is that there is so much to know and learn that would be useful in making your life easier when it comes to crunching data. Learning these tricks and tips can help you to not only lighten your workload, but to help you find additional insights into the data-related projects you are working on.

One of the places I suggest that you start advancing your knowledge of Excel is to delve further into the world of formulas and functions. Functions are basically "ready-made" formulas that do lots of neat and very useful things.

Similarly, formulas entail combinations of mathematical operators, numbers, cell addresses, and sometimes functions themselves. Formulas are needed when there is no specific existing function for what you need to do, or for when you need to combine multiple functions together.

Here are 3 common Excel formulas that you should definitely learn:

1. Remove unwanted spaces at the beginning or ending of a string of text:

Okay, let's start with a quick and easy one. If you are dealing with large amounts of text-based data (e.g., addresses, names, etc.) and - especially if it was collected from various sources or hastily entered via manual data entry - it is likely that there are lots of superfluous spaces before and/or after many of the words or phrases. These spaces may be invisible to the naked eye, but they can represent an annoying problem if you want to, for example, sort the data properly, use it in graphs, or combine it.

The solution? Use the TRIM() function. For example:

=TRIM(A3) (note: this would remove any unneeded spaces before or after the text in cell A3).

Important: this function successfully removes the extra spaces at the beginning and end of a string of text, but it does not touch the spaces between bits of text. So, for example, the name "John Smith" will NOT become "JohnSmith" when using TRIM(). If you want to remove those spaces, used Excel's Replace feature (replace the space with nothing).

2. Calculate the amount of time between two dates:

If you have been using Excel for a while, you may have been faced with the need to calculate the time difference (in days, weeks, months, or years) between two different dates. The formula is pretty straightforward. The formulas for days, months and years are almost identical, and are as follows:

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"d") (this calculates the number of days between the two dates in cells A1 and B1)

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"m") (this one calculates the number of months)

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"y") (meanwhile, this calculates the number of years)

Finally, the formula for calculating the number of weeks between two dates looks like this:

=INT((B1-A1)/7) (where the dates are entered in cells B1 and A1)

3. Find the smallest or largest number in a range:

Finally, you may have situations arise whereby you are faced with a large number of cells grouped together (called a range of cells) and you want to know which is the largest and which is the smallest number among them. One solution to this would be to just sort a column and figure it out that way. But, a simple sort will not do the trick if you have a range that spans multiple columns. The solution? Use MIN and MAX functions. Here are two examples:

=MIN(A1:D3) (note: this finds the smallest number among the numbers in cells A1 through D3)

=MAX(A1:D3) (note: this finds the largest number among the numbers in cells A1 through D3)

Excel is capable of processing a very large number of functions and formulas which, if you choose to take a bit of time to master, will speed up your work tremendously. And, doing so will likely reduce the chances for making errors when compared to trying your own, homemade workaround methods.
