Many die-hard gamers still mock the whole notion of video gaming on a laptop computer. The two simply are not compatible, they do not compute. They argue a laptop is simply too small and too compact to handle all that heat --- literally, figuratively and physically.

Achieving high performance usually means any computer, whether desktop or laptop, will give off a lot of heat. And cramming all those high-end components into such a small confined space only adds to this problem. If you monitor the different gaming forums, you will hear constant anecdotal stories of gaming laptops simply unable to handle all that heat. Actually, with most laptops you can upgrade the RAM with ease if you have the free slots available. You can also upgrade the Hard Drive but depending on your laptop model, other components such as Graphics Cards and processors may be hard (if not impossible or worthwhile) to upgrade in a laptop compared with upgrading a desktop PC.

On the other hand, with a desktop PC, there is amble room for upgrading which makes it a much more suitable candidate since gaming systems need to be constantly upgraded if you want the best gaming performance possible; which after all is the unwritten creed of most true gamers. They want the best and they want it now.

However, major laptop makers know a good thing (profit) when they see it and are jumping all over the gaming laptop market. We are constantly seeing more and more powerful gaming systems hitting the marketplace. Whether they can also fully capture the hearts of true gamers is an entirely different question, one that won't be answered any time soon.

Computer Freezing - You Can Fix it and Prevent It

Windows PC users often experience freezing problems and must know how to handle this. Freezing may even happen when you are not working on your computer. It can take place during an antivirus scan, while watching videos, listening to audio material or working with the word processor.

Usually, to recover from system freezing you can press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination. With Windows 95, 98, and ME, this will give you the option of rebooting your computer. With Windows NT, 2000, and XP when you press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination this will open the Task Manager window. You may then browse through the running programs listed in Task Manager, pick the program that is not responding, then click the End Task button to close the program. When the program is closed, your system should be running normally.

You can experience system freezing if you run an application which is not compatible with your system. Quite obviously you need to remove the application to correct this problem. If there is a compatible version of the application you should obtain this and install it instead.

If you install a Windows operating system that requires more resources than your PC has, this will result in freezing. The minimum system requirements for Windows XP is a 300 MHz processor, 1.5 GB disk space, SVGA (800x600) resolution monitor, and CD-ROM or DVD Drive for installation. If the processor, disk space, and memory does not meet these requirements, you may experience frequent system freezing.

Freezing may result if any hardware such as the keyboard or mouse are not compatible with the operating system on your PC. This type of conflict will markedly slow down your computer and can be the cause of frequent freezing. To eliminate these problems, you should only install hardware and programs which are compatible with your computer.

Some applications like Internet Explorer and some third-party software, will store information in the Temp folder of your system. If your hard disk capacity is small you may not have the space to store these temporary files, and you will as a result experience freezing. To avoid this you can use utilities, for example Disk Cleanup, to remove unnecessary files and data from your hard drive and thus to free up considerable disk space. By using Disk cleanup you may remove temporary internet files, unwanted files, program files, web pages and various other data. Disk Cleanup will empty your Recycle Bin and compress files. With Windows XP, You can find Disk Cleanup by clicking on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tool -> Disk Cleanup.

Errors and bad sectors will develop on your hard drive over a period of use. Your computer will freeze when you attempt to access information stored in the bad sectors. The hard disk must be kept in good condition by regularly using Windows XP maintenance applications such as Chkdsk and Disk Defragmenter.

To open Disk Defragmenter go to the System Tools menu. You can then defragment drives which are identified by the letters C:, D:, etc. You can run ChkDsk from Start -> Run or from the command prompt. Chkdsk volume:/f will repair disk errors without scanning for bad sectors, and chkdsk volume:/r commands will repair errors and will identify bad sectors on the hard drive and mark them.

Windows registry may also cause system errors and freezing if it is corrupted or damaged. Correction of this problem is obtained by scanning the registry for errors and removing all unwanted and outdated material. The best way to handle this is by downloading a quality registry cleaner tool from the internet. Registry cleaner applications are designed to be easy to use and will correct registry problems safely and quickly. We tested several of the most popular registry cleaners and found that there is considerable difference in performance, ease of use and features available. What is SCADA?

SCADA stands for the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. This system basically collects the information from the various sensors installed at the factory or the remote locations. In programming, it's sometimes required to work with unidentified pieces of data.

That's when conditions are convenient,conditions allow a program to execute an action based on the event of a previous command. Using this type of command, we could instruct a program to do one thing if the "x" variable in our latter example turned out to be 9 days, and then do different thing if the variable turned out to be 31 days.

Commands, data, variables, and conditions help build the most simple programs and there are certainly more components of any programming language. But when they're typed into a programing language and compiled to create an executable file (a file ending with the .exe extension), they turn into a software application.

Instead of buying your application from a software house, you run it from the Internet and pay for it when you need it. Last year this approach was called Software as a Service (SaaS). However that was very 2008; these days you refer to Cloud Computing.

In 1980 I produced a company budget using a teletype machine connected via a dial-up line to an ADP computer somewhere in the cloud that was the ADP network. Google

Google have a suite of office applications that run 'in the cloud'. These could be very useful if you have a special need to share the documents with others.

Amazon

Amazon has a Cloud offering which in its raw state is a virtual private server (VPS). This is a login to a Unix or Windows computer that looks and feels as if you have the computer all to yourself. Physically you are sharing the computer with many others but this is all hidden from you.

There are many VPS services on offer from many suppliers. However the Amazon offering has a big difference. When you create a server you can specify that it is to be preloaded with software from a library. This is what transforms it into 'Cloud Computing' rather than just any old VPS. Because the library of functions is pre-tested and pre-installed the startup time and cost should be much reduced.

Hosting providers

If Amazon can market a VPS offering as Cloud Computing, then the door is opened for many others to do the same - but without the preloaded software bit. You might see this as 'Cloud Hosting' instead. Thus the definition of the term is migrating as we watch it.

1. Remove unwanted spaces at the beginning or ending of a string of text:

Okay, let's start with a quick and easy one. If you are dealing with large amounts of text-based data (e.g., addresses, names, etc.) and - especially if it was collected from various sources or hastily entered via manual data entry - it is likely that there are lots of superfluous spaces before and/or after many of the words or phrases. These spaces may be invisible to the naked eye, but they can represent an annoying problem if you want to, for example, sort the data properly, use it in graphs, or combine it.

The solution? Use the TRIM() function. For example:

=TRIM(A3) (note: this would remove any unneeded spaces before or after the text in cell A3).

Important: this function successfully removes the extra spaces at the beginning and end of a string of text, but it does not touch the spaces between bits of text. So, for example, the name "John Smith" will NOT become "JohnSmith" when using TRIM(). If you want to remove those spaces, used Excel's Replace feature (replace the space with nothing).

2. Calculate the amount of time between two dates:

If you have been using Excel for a while, you may have been faced with the need to calculate the time difference (in days, weeks, months, or years) between two different dates. The formula is pretty straightforward. The formulas for days, months and years are almost identical, and are as follows:

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"d") (this calculates the number of days between the two dates in cells A1 and B1)

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"m") (this one calculates the number of months)

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"y") (meanwhile, this calculates the number of years)

Finally, the formula for calculating the number of weeks between two dates looks like this:

=INT((B1-A1)/7) (where the dates are entered in cells B1 and A1)

3. Find the smallest or largest number in a range:

Finally, you may have situations arise whereby you are faced with a large number of cells grouped together (called a range of cells) and you want to know which is the largest and which is the smallest number among them. One solution to this would be to just sort a column and figure it out that way. But, a simple sort will not do the trick if you have a range that spans multiple columns. The solution? Use MIN and MAX functions. Here are two examples:

=MIN(A1:D3) (note: this finds the smallest number among the numbers in cells A1 through D3)

=MAX(A1:D3) (note: this finds the largest number among the numbers in cells A1 through D3)

Excel is capable of processing a very large number of functions and formulas which, if you choose to take a bit of time to master, will speed up your work tremendously. And, doing so will likely reduce the chances for making errors when compared to trying your own, homemade workaround methods.

1. Set up a new account called Work in Progress or Construction in Progress-go to Lists > Chart of Accounts, click the Account button and select New. Select Other Current Asset for the account type.

2. Go to Lists > Item List and change the expense account on your service items to the asset account you set up above. If you don't see an expense account, click the button next to This item is used in assemblies..."

3. Add two Other Charge items:

a. Transfer out of WIP - with WIP as the account and note in the description that the amount should be positive

b. Transfer into COS - with COS as the account and note in the description that the amount should be negative

4. Make sure to always use the Items tab instead of the Expenses tab on all your transactions

5. If you use Job Profitability reports, modify/filter them to include your WIP account. Click on Modify Report, select the Filters tab, select Account, select Multiple Accounts, check All income and expense accounts and your WIP account. Memorize the report.

6. Create a report to track the amount in WIP by job by going to Reports > Custom Summary Report. Click on Modify Report, select Display Columns = Account List and Display Rows = Customer. Click on the Filters tab, select Account = your WIP account. Memorize the report.

7. Once the project is completed, prepare an invoice or sales receipt with a line for the sales price (mapped to an income account) and then add the two other charge items you created above making sure to use a negative amount for Transfer into COS. Once done, the ending total for the invoice should match the sales price.

I've always been partial to portable computers as opposed to desktop PCs for work - I just hate being chained in one spot when I'm waiting for inspiration to hit, and moving around can certainly help with staving off writer's block. On top of that, sometimes you just need to get away from the noise that comes from being around other people, and you need a perfectly quiet little corner to hide out in.

My last laptop was not gigantic, but it was a wee bit too heavy to just haul around from room to room, so I have to say that I was almost excited when it broke and I had the chance to pick up a netbook. There are plenty of choices when it comes to the various netbooks, so here are a few major considerations when it comes to looking at a netbook model to do writing work on.

Screen size: If you don't have a big monitor on hand to hook up your netbook to (many of them can output to an external monitor) then you're going to want to keep this first and foremost in your mind. Netbook screen sizes typically range from 7 inches to 10 inches, although later models are starting to move as high as 12 inches. In my opinion, that makes them more along the lines of a mini laptop, with the price to match.

The netbook I picked up has a 10.2 inch screen, which works for me. I've had no problem with using it for long writing sessions, although I personally don't think I could go with the smaller ones. There are just too many typos that will slip through at that point.

Hard Drive Space and Type: When you're mostly dealing with word documents and a bit of graphics, you really don't need all that much when it comes to hard drive space. The type is something that you'll want to pay more attention to. The typical netbook harddrive is 5400 rpm, which might be a little or a lot lower than what you would encounter on your desktop. If you're looking for a speed demon, you're going to want to pick a netbook that comes with a SSD drive. This is a solid state drive that is one of the fastest types of hard drives out there, if not the single most fastest. There are a few considerations you'll want to keep in mind with a SSD drive if you are getting a XP or Vista system - refer to the netbook tweaking guide if you need help with that.

Keyboard Size: Writers live and die by how nice their keyboards are to type on - I'm on my HP Mini 1000 about 10 - 12 hours a day between work and my own projects, and it's one of the nicest keyboards I've ever had to work on. You're going to want to look for a model that has a 92% keyboard - that is, 92% of the size of your typical keyboard, not that big of a difference - but it means the world when compared to the much smaller sizes that some netbooks are sporting.

Battery Life: If you like to wander around the town to seek out inspiration, battery life becomes a very important consideration. The power consumption of netbooks are typically much lower than your standard notebook, so you're already getting a bit of benefit from that. If you get the chance to customize or be very picky about the type of netbook you are getting, go for a 6 cell battery. This will get you 5 - 7 hours of battery life, as opposed to a much shorter time span with the more standard 3 cell battery. I have a 6 cell and I love it.

Tech Specs: Usually I would mention tech specs at this point in a netbook selection article, but to be honest if you're just running Internet and a word processor, every netbook on the market is going to have the specs to get you going. More memory is always a good thing, however this is really not that big of a consideration.

Price: Finally, we have price. Although you can spend upwards of $600 on a netbook, there is really no reason to. You can get a good writing netbook starting at around $200, although I will admit that I put down $418 for my customized HP Mini. That was more because of the fact that I do a bit of web designing as well as writing, and I wanted to go for a slightly more powerful machine. My netbook recommendation for writers, however is one of the Asus EEE PCs - I like their 10 inch ones with the 6 cell battery, listed below, although they are one of the biggest netbook manufacturers out there.

A netbook backpack is a no brainer for high school and college students - the netbook is about the same size as most books (although they are much thinner) so a good sized backpack for a netbook should give you plenty of space for your books and other gadgets as well. If you spend a lot of time traveling light, this would also be a good idea, although not quite as good as a specific travel bag made for the netbook. Many backpacks are also convertible into messenger bags or plain cases, although that depends on the brand.

Designer Netbook Bag

When you have bags of any sort, you have designer bags of various sorts. If you need a high end netbook bag to go with your high end style, these are the types that you're going to want to go to. There are many high end designers that are starting to look at the smaller netbook size for their technology lines, and most of the time you're going to see interesting layouts as far as pockets and compartments, luxury materials, and other bells and whistles that you only get by living on the wild side of things.

When IBM tosses down 100,000,000 R&D dollars, we had all better pay attention. IBM has discovered mobile, no doubt dumbfounded by the runaway popularity of its media rival Apple. I am sure that Apple's original 1984 poke at the then-failing IBM left a shoe print on IBM's corporate butt. With IT hardware commoditizing and the market for IT services being finite and more competitive, it would be unsurprising if IBM was looking for where to grow next.

They may be as enamored by iPhones and Apple's app store as a crazed public.

IBM has decided to invest $100M into mobile communications research over a five year period. Though Big Blue is focusing primarily on extending enterprise IT to handies, they are not immune to the notion of enabling B2C and C2C interaction as well. Apple has demonstrated that selling to the masses generates massive mullah.

Being an organization driven by numbers and other forms of common sense, IBM made note of two interesting datum. Foremost was that 83% of the humans roaming around the planet today do not have easy access to computers. However, these folks are being launched directly into the wireless age. IBM's Institute for Business Value notes that mobile user headcounts will rise 191% before the end of 2011, before the next Congress has a chance to muck up the economy further than the current Congress appears ready to do.

At the end of that year a mere one billion homosapiens will be texting one another, and in the process disproving the million monkey theory once and for all.

Think about a billion customers. If you could earn a penny from each of them, you would pocket $10M bucks. Do that every day and you would churn enough money to make even Obama blink. This explains why executives from America's mobile carriers vigorously defended their text messaging pricing before Congress. A billion monkeys may not text the complete works of Shakespeare, but they will generate a wad of cash large enough to impress King Lear ... or even Bill Gates.

Which is where SaaS comes in.

IDC claims that SaaS (at least in Asian markets, many parts of which skipped the industrial revolution and landed squarely in the Internet age) will grow at six times the rate of packaged software. The report lists recurring obvious statements about the low start-up cost of SaaS apps and other unsurprising factors. What it doesn't note is the union of SaaS, cloud computing and mobile.

This is where some major gold will be unearthed.

It is a given that mobile handsets are computers and unified communications systems. People's lives are now influenced by what they can or cannot do with a handset. As IBM notes and green-clad Iranians proved this week "...mobile telephony holds the future of communication and exchange of information."

Yet there must be a back-end for most mobile apps. A server somewhere intermediates the exchange of everything and serves-up applications to handsets. Since mobile apps are like the Internet of two decades ago - so new that nobody knows what might be profitable - a lot of experimentation needs to occur. Apple's app store was Steve Job's way of letting a million minds experiment and prove which iPhone applications people really wanted and needed, and do so without investing Steve's own R&D dollars.

SaaS on public clouds will be the defacto approach to creating public (and perhaps private) mobile applications. Low cost and flexible scalability are necessary when introducing a new mobile application to a billion potential users. Vendors at the intersection of mobile and SaaS stand to profit handsomely. Anyone who can take the Force.com platform approach and dedicate it to mobile applications stands to earn the business of every soul searching for a way to profit from a billion mobile users. This is not quite a new technology market definition, but it is unique enough to be very interesting.

How Do I Convert iTunes to MP3?

Synchronising Computer Networks to an Atomic Clock

Atomic clocks are well-known for being accurate. Most people may never have seen one but are probably aware that atomic clocks keep highly precise time. In fact modern caesium clock will keep accurate time and not lose a second in one hundred million years.

This amount of precision may seem overkill but a multitude of modern technologies rely on atomic clocks and require such a high level of precision. A perfect example is the satellite navigation systems now found in most auto cars. GPS is reliant on their ultr high accuracy because the satellite signals used in triangulation travel at the speed of light which in a single second can cover nearly 100,000 km.

So it can be seen how some modern technologies rely on this ultra precise timekeeping from atomic clocks but their use doesn't stop there. They govern the world's global timescale UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) and they can also be used to synchronise computer networks too.

It may seem extreme to use this nanosecond precision to synchronise computer networks too but as many time sensitive transactions are conducted across the internet with such trades as the stock exchange where prices can fall or rise each and every second it can be seen why atomic clocks are used.

To receive the time from an atomic clock a dedicated NTP server is the most secure and accurate method. These devices receive a time signal broadcast by either atomic clocks from national physics laboratories or direct from onboard GPS satellites.

By using a dedicated NTP server a computer network will be more secure and as it is synchronised to UTC (the global timescale) it will in effect be synchronised with every other computer network using a NTP server.

Protecting Displays in Hazardous Locations

Display devices such as LCDs and plasmas are no longer just used for computer and televisual applications. The price of modern display devices has fallen to such a level that the use of such devices in applications such as digital signage is now widespread.

Displays such as LCD and plasma are ideal for signage purposes because they are backlit so when it comes to safety signs such as fire exits they are superlative to conventional signs are found in all sorts of locations from factory floors to outdoors.

However, as electronic devices displays are vulnerable to many of the hazardous elements found in industrial and outdoor locations. Dust, dirt, wind, rain and wash down locations are all areas where normally LCDs and plasmas cannot go.

Fortunately rugged LCD enclosures are designed to combat many of these hazardous environments often designed and built to European IP standards. The IP rating signifies the amount of protection the LCD enclosure offers against dust and water. An IP54 LCD enclosure will be ideal for industrial or rugged locations while and IP66 LCD enclosure is better suited for wash down environments.

After purchasing the right kind of memory, one can install it in four simple steps: locating the empty slots after turning off the computer and pulling off the power cable from the CPU; unfastening the clips from both ends of the memory slot and lining up the memory module with the corresponding slot in the CPU then sliding the new memory into the slot; replacing the computer cover, plugging back the power cable and restarting the system; and finally verifying the new memory. This is all it takes to increase computer performance by upgrading the memory.

When Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lines (ADSL) first came out,it was billed as a consumer service. Many small and medium enterprises (SME) were quick to identify ADSL as a cheap way to get connected to the Internet without relying on slow dial up or an expensive diginet leased line. The problem was, however, that ADSL could only get you so far. ADSL's shortcomings are:

• Limited bandwidth speeds,
• Extremely poor upload speeds, when compared to its download speeds,
• Limited account sizes,
• No guarantee on service availability

In South Africa our current top of the line ADSL connection can provide a maximum of 4Mbps. If you want higher throughput you need to consider, expensive 3g or HSDPA wireless solutions. The costs of these wireless alternatives are prohibitive. However, over the last two years, bonded ADSL has emerged as an alternative to expensive diginet leased lines. Bonded ADSL works by taking up to 6 ADSL lines and bonding their bandwidth together to get a throughput that is up to 6 times more than any one line.

Thus a company can get a download speed of up to 24Mbps up and as much as 2 -3 Mbps upload speed at a fraction of the cost of a diginet leased line. In fact you can get two or more of these solutions for the price of 1 diginet leased line.
